ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The city’s east side animal shelter houses hundreds of dogs and cats.
On Wednesday morning, though, it was all about one stout, black, Labrador and corgi mix named Chaco, as people and pups alike gathered to celebrate him.
A video about Chaco’s work as a therapy dog made by owners Peg Biedermann and Paula Willis and sent to “The Ellen Degeneres Show” netted them a $5,000 PetSmart gift card and $5,000 in cash.

The couple donated all of the prize to needy animals, including $1,000 in needed supplies to the east side shelter.
They adopted Carma, another of the couple’s four dogs, from a city shelter around two years ago.

Donations were also made to Chaco’s alma mater, a Salt Lake City shelter, the shelters they got their other two furry friends from and to animals affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston.
The show held a contest earlier in the year calling for videos depicting “Why you love your pet.”
Chaco’s video features a fourth grade class at 7 Bar Elementary School, where Willis and Biedermann retired from as teachers and Chaco now works as a therapy dog.
“We love Chaco because Chaco is a special boy,” two children tell the camera.
“We love Chaco because his job is to make us smile,” a pair of little girls say.
Chaco was adopted by the couple on the day he was to be put down, Willis said.
Biedermann had been looking at him online, and they decided to have him flown into Albuquerque.
“I just felt like we needed to save this little boy,” Biedermann said.
Nearly 10 years later, Chaco is “paying it forward” as a therapy dog serving in schools, nursing homes and hospitals around the city.
“One of the things he hopes he can help kids learn about is spaying and neutering their animals and rescuing as opposed to buying from a breeder. We teach proper ways to handle and treat dogs,” Willis said. “We also hope that we can teach kids the joys of paying it forward.”
Paul Caster, director of the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department, said the donations of small bottles for puppies and kittens, toys, pet beds and other needed supplies will go a long way.
“It really makes a huge difference for the animals,” he Media
